Grand Funk Railroad Inside Looking Out
Favorited: 93 days ago
Comment: Grand Funk Railroad, sometimes shortened as Grand Funk, is an American rock band that was highly popular during the 1970s, touring extensively and playing to packed arenas worldwide. David Fricke of Rolling Stone magazine once said, "You cannot talk about rock in the 1970s without talking about Grand Funk Railroad!"[1][2] Known for their crowd-pleasing arena rock style, the band was well-regarded by audiences despite a relative lack of critical acclaim.[3] The band's name is a play on words of the Grand Trunk Western Railroad, a railroad line that ran through the band's home town of Flint, Michigan.

Grand Funk Railroad 01 I'm Your Captain
Favorited: 93 days ago
Comment: "I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home)" is a 1970 song written by American musician Mark Farner and recorded by Grand Funk Railroad as the closing track to their album Closer to Home. Ten minutes in duration, it is the band's longest studio recording. One of the group's best-known songs, it is composed as two distinct but closely related movements. Its title has been rendered in various ways across many different Grand Funk albums

Deep Purple - Woman From Tokyo
Favorited: 93 days ago
Comment: Who Do We Think We Are was recorded in Rome in July 1972 and Frankfurt in October 1972, using the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio. "Woman from Tokyo", the first track recorded in July 1972, is about touring Japan for the first time (e.g. the lyric "Fly into the Rising Sun"). The only other track released from the Rome sessions is the out-take "Painted Horse". The rest of the album was recorded in Frankfurt after more touring (including Japan). Ian Gillan left the band following this album, citing internal tensions widely thought to include a feud with Blackmore. However, in an interview supporting the release of the 1984 Mark II Deep Purple comeback album Perfect Strangers, Gillan stated that fatigue and management conflicts also had a lot to do with it.

Brock hires newspaperman Paul Verrall to see if he can soften her rough edges and make her more presentable in capital society. But Harry gets more than he bargained for as Billie absorbs Verall's lessons in U.S. history and not only comes to the realization that Harry is nothing but a two-bit, corrupt crook, but in the process also falls in love with her handsome tutor. Uriah Heep - The Wizard
Favorited: 156 days ago
Comment: The Wizard (Uriah Heep song) - "The Wizard" is a single from rock band Uriah Heep's 1972 album Demons & Wizards and was the first single to be lifted from the album. It was composed by Mark Clarke and Ken Hensley.[1] It is a gentle, semi-acoustic ballad whose lyrics deal with a man wandering until he meets "the Wizard of a thousand kings", a possible reference to the druid Merlin, to Gandalf, to an angel or even God. This song is the first Uriah Heep single which had a music video. ,,,,,, WIKIPEDIA - wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wizard_(Uriah_Heep_song)

Over the Edge Radio

Comment: Over the Edge (or OTE) is a sound collage radio program hosted and produced in the United States by Don Joyce. ------- ---- -- Joyce is also a member of the pioneering sound collage band Negativland, members of which frequently make guest appearances on Over the Edge. A series of Over the Edge episodes have been released under the Negativland name. Critic Ned Raggett describes Over the Edge as "a merry trip into an alternate world," while critic Stephen Cramer describes Over the Edge as "the longest-running block of free-form radio in the history of radio ... essentially live performance art." ------- ---- -- Founded in 1981, OTE is broadcast live on KPFA in Berkeley, California, every second, third, and fourth Thursday morning from midnight to 3 a.m. On the rare occasion of a month with a fifth Thursday OTE runs an additional two hours, from midnight to 5 a.m. The show is also available on-line, streamed live from KPFA.org (which podcasts the show), or from Negativland.com, where many older episodes are available as well. - --- - WIKIPEDIA.ORG

IUMA: SCREAMIN ERIC AND THE ERECTIONS
Favorited: 188 days ago
Comment: Since starting out in early 1991 as a poorly playing five piece band covering songs of The Stooges, The Sonics, Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers amongst others, SCREAMIN´ ERIC AND THE ERECTIONS began writing their own material taking in any influences as long as they were noisy and had balls. The result was quite schizophrenic in the sense that the live sets at the time would contain songs that went in different directions and would reflect different genres. However the songs always had a certain distinctive sound of their own and carried the band's trademark. By 1994 one guitar player was kicked out of the band, and the remaining four members kept on playing but from now on a lot more focused on keeping it simple and playing some ass-kicking garage punk rock. In 1998 a four track 12" vinyl EP was released on the Danish label Hard On Records. Since then the band was some how fed up with the older material and it´s more sinister sounding songs and decided to let things take a direction towards more rock´n´roll, noisy blues, punk rock and a lot faster songs. Scandinavian bands like the Hellacopters, the Flaming Sideburns, Turbonegro and a lot of others have showed that it´s possible to do what we always wanted to do and tried to do in the beginning but never did half as good as we do now. On August 18th of 2000 SCREAMIN´ ERIC AND THE ERECTIONS released a four track cd entitled Take No Shit. And on September 22nd of 2001 SCREAMIN´ ERIC AND THE ERECTIONS have released a three track 7" single entitled Instant Asshole. An entire album entitled "Freak Show" has been released on November 14th of 2003 on the Swedish label HepTown Records - it's a real killer!!

IUMA: The Bottle Babies
Favorited: 188 days ago
Comment: Whiskey-laden vocals combined with punk-twang guitars, big bottom-end blues bass---a' la ZZTop---and power house drums. This band sounds like the raging alcoholic bastard love child of Johnny Cash and Iggy Pop. Combined ex-members of The Pathetics, The Apostles, and The Strap-Ons, make rock 'n roll with brute but there's something about it that's "Southern Fried" and finger lickin' good. You can catch inflections of 50's era rock, punk, country, and garage rock. The Bottle Babies are stepping into shiek musical ground by combining the "F.T.W" angst of punk , "Tear In My Beer" posture of country, and "Bo-Diddley" 50's style riffs. You must see this band. You must hear this band. The power of DeeDee Ramone and Willie Nelson compel you.

Comment: Fried Okra Jones is an origional blues band out of Stillwater, OK. Playing a variety of blues, and blues/rock, this group rocks northern Oklahoma with a traditional blues sound backed by the legendary harp player Watermelon Slim. Heavy "Texas" guitar played by 'Texas' Ray Isom creates a solid rhythm line that helps make this band unique.

Negro Prison Songs from The Mississippi State Penitentiary
Favorited: 188 days ago
Comment: A collection of songs recorded at the Mississippi State Penitentiary in 1947. The bes t single document of the African American work song and field holler tradition.... The group work songs, while moving and an excellent examples of the style, are by their nature less distinctive than the extraordinary solo performances like my favories "It Makes A Long Time Man Fell Bad". These are all very powerful and all together richly African American. "These songs belong to the musical tradition which Africans brought to the New World, but they are also as American as the Mississippi River. They were born out of the very rock and earth of this country, as black hands broke the soil, moved, reformed it, and rivers of stinging sweat poured upon the land under the blazing heat of Southern skies, and are mounted upon the passion that this struggle with nature brought forth. They tell us the story of the slave gang, the sharecropper system, the lawless work camp, the chain gang, the pen." --Alan Lomax Keywords : African Americans -- Mississippi -- Music. | Prisoners' songs. | Work songs -- Mississippi. | Blues (Music) -- Mississippi -- 1941-1950. ____ COMMENT - Reviewer: Alice4447 - - January 19, 2013 Subject: Powerful Stuff! These songs are priceless for their truth and power. We are very fortunate to have these still in almost perfect condition.

Comment: Blind Willie Mctell ??? classic blues - country blues - old blues - The singer may be his wife Kate. According to Wikipedia, they were married in 1934 and performed together until 1939. The sound quality seems more like that period than the late 1920s.. ???

punk rock 1974
Favorited: 291 days ago
Comment: THE FRENCHIES - MORE POPPY TYPE ROCK MUSIC THAN PUNK. The band formed around 1973 in the Paris suburbs around Michael Memmi , Morgan and Davis Linn Lingreën , which adjoin Olivier Legrand, says Kiss Olivier and Jean-Marie Poiré , said Martin Dune . A reputation is built over concerts on their look and their approach , encouraged by the proto -punk fringe of French rock critics as Patrick Eudeline . Their album Lola Cola , recorded in 24 hours , was released in 1974 for Pathé - Marconi but receives only minimal promotion. Jean-Marie Poiré share in 1975 , replaced by Chrissie Hynde on vocals for a few concerts before the end of the group resulting in the departure of the latter and Michael Memmi for London.

Comment: MICK JAGGER & MERRY CLAYTON - VOCAL TRACK ONLY - STUDIO VOICE-OVER TO GIMME SHELTER -- GOOD STUFF,,,,,,,THERE WILL BE AREAS OF SILENCE WHERE THE MUSIC / INSTRUMENTS WOULD ORDINARILY BE PLAYING ON THE FINISHED RECORDING - VOICEOVER ONLY A higher-pitched second vocal track is sung by the guest vocalist Merry Clayton. Of her inclusion, Jagger said in the 2003 book According to... The Rolling Stones: "The use of the female voice was the producer's idea. It would be one of those moments along the lines of 'I hear a girl on this track - get one on the phone.' " Clayton gives her solo performance, and one of the song's most famous pieces, after a solo performed by Richards, repeatedly singing "Rape, murder; It's just a shot away, It's just a shot away," and finally screaming the final stanza. She and Jagger finish the song with the line, "Love, sister, it's just a kiss away." To date it remains one of the most prominent contributions to a Rolling Stones track by a female vocalist.

Most of these hits were written and produced by Motown's main songwriting and production team, Holland–Dozier–Holland. At their peak in the mid-1960s, the Supremes rivaled the Beatles in worldwide popularity, and their success made it possible for future African American R&B and soul musicians to find mainstream success.

Muddy Waters - Folk Singer
Favorited: 2 years ago
Comment: Muddy's "unplugged" album was cut in September of 1963 and still sounds fresh and vital today. It was Muddy simply returning to his original style on a plain acoustic guitar in a well-tuned room with Willie Dixon on string bass, Clifton James on drums, and Buddy Guy on second acoustic guitar. The nine tracks are divvied up between full rhythm section treatments with Buddy and Muddy as a duo and the final track, "Feel Like Going Home," which Waters approaches solo. What makes this version of the album a worthwhile buy is the inclusion of five bonus tracks from his next two sessions: An April 1964 session brings us Willie Dixon's "The Same Thing" and Muddy's "You Can't Lose What You Never Had," while the October 1964 session features J.T. Brown on sax and clarinet on "Short Dress Woman" and "My John the Conqueror Root," as well as "Put Me in Your Lay Away," another strong side. Folk Singer offers both sides of Muddy from the early '60s. Cub Koda, allmusic.com

Buffalo Springfield - For What It's Worth 1967
Favorited: 2 years ago
Comment: The song was inspired by an event that took place during the early stages of the psychedelic era in November 1966, the year in which Buffalo Springfield started playing as the house band at the Whisky a Go Go on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles Times, annoyed residents and business owners in the district had encouraged the passage of strict (10:00 p.m.) curfew and loitering laws to reduce the traffic congestion resulting from crowds of young club patrons. This was subsequently perceived by young, local rock and roll music fans as an infringement on their civil rights, and on Saturday, November 12, 1966, fliers were distributed along the Strip inviting people to demonstrate later that day. Hours before the protest one of L.A.'s rock 'n' roll radio stations announced there would be a rally at Pandora's Box, a club at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Crescent Heights, and cautioned people to tread carefully. The Times reported that as many as 1,000 youthful demonstrators, including such celebrities as Jack Nicholson and Peter Fonda (who was afterward handcuffed by police), erupted in protest against the perceived repressive enforcement of these recently invoked curfew laws. Though often mistaken for an anti-war song, it was this first of the "Sunset Strip riots" which inspired then Buffalo Springfield band member Stephen Stills to write "For What It’s Worth", recorded about three weeks after on December 5, 1966.

The .zip file also includes a scan of a flyer that came with the album that has a short blurb about each band. FEATURES the first recordings by the Gories, a band that later spawned the Dirtbombs and directly influenced the White Stripes, while others bands like Termites of 1939 seemed to have recorded just one song. I recorded it from the vinyl straight into my computer.

Consuming Women (Women as Consumers)

Comment: A woman dancing to rock n'roll music, wearing a yellow dress with a yellow scarf, Woman trying to flag down a taxi. She is single and fun-loving. She is engaged. She is newly married. And not so newly married. She has no children. She has one child. She has many children. She even has grandchildren. She may be exclusively a homemaker. Or she may hold a part-time job. Or she works in an office full-time. She enjoys her leisure time. She participates in community affairs. She's athletic, to a degree. She travels. And she spends money. In any case, our consumer is a real person, one of a large group of individuals that make up our consumer world."

Comment: VIDEO -- "The Legend of Marilyn Monroe" examines Marilyn through an investigation of her private live. From her turbulent childhood when her mother vanished beyond the dark wall of mental illness, through her short stays at various orphanages and foster homes to her marriage at sixteen to James Dougherty. Relive Marilyn's first exposure during World War II as a calendar girl for the war effort, one of her first performances in Ladies of the Chorus, and acting debut in "Asphalt Jungle", then into the limelight as a glamorous Hollywood superstar: "The Legend of Marilyn Monroe", lifts the veil of intrigue and depicts the essence of the legendary Norma Jean Baker we grew to love as Marilyn Monroe.

Straight outta the pit Punk Rock Radio May 15 2012
Favorited: 3 years ago
Comment: On a very very special edition of Straight Outta the Pit, Punk Rock Radio. - We open with music from the Stumble Records Compilation. Moses dances like crazy to music by Skullians, it does not translate well to radio. - The Pharaoh's History of Punk Rock continues it's roll through our neighbour to the south with a peek at the American Hardcore scene. Though the term "hardcore" was coined by D.O.A. front man, Joey Shithead, it's roots can be traced to great American bands like Black Flag and the Minute Men. The Pharaoh flexes all his punk history muscles discussing record labels like SST, founded by Black Flag original Greg Ginn, and also must read punk rock books like Our Band Could Be Your Life. 45 minutes of excellence! - Our loveable co-hosts send birthday wishes to Katie from Brutal Youth. - The local hour sees music from Brutal Youth, The Rotten and The Penske File. We also open the classic vault to play tunes from Handheld, The Candidates and The Charge. - The cross country tour stops in St. John's Newfoundland with music from The Black Mask Brigade, a band that has since moved east and reformed into Brutal Youth. (They were on the show a lot tonight) - We make new friends with the band The Potholez as they listen in to our antics and we listen to their jams. Check out their songs on Reverbnation. --- KEYWORDS::: punk rock; radio; canadian punk rock; punk rock history.

Comment: Johnny Winter (born John Dawson Winter III) Born Feb 23, 1944 is an American Blues Guitarist, Singer, and producer. Best known for his late 1960's and 1970's high-energy blues rock albums and live performances, Winter also produced three Grammy Award albums for blues legend Muddy Waters. Since this time with Waters, Johnny Winter has recorded several Grammy Nominated blues albums and continues to tour extensively. In I988, he was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and in 2003, He was ranked 74th in Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the "100 Greateset Guitarists of all time." Johnny Winter, along with his brother Edgar Winter were nurtured at an early age by their parents in musical pursuits. Both he and his brother, who were born with albinism, began performing at an early age. When he was ten years old, Winter appeared on a local Children's Show playing Ukelele and singing Everly Brothers songs with his brother His recording career egan at the age of fifteen, when his band "Johnny and the Jammers" released "School Day Blues" on a Houston record label. During this same period, he was able to see performances by classic blues artists such as Muddy Waters, B.B. King, and Bobby Bland. During the early years, he would sit in with "Roy Head and The Traits" when they performed in the Beaumont, Texas area, and in 1967, Winter recorded a single with the Traits. "Tramp" backed with "Parchman Farm" (Universal Records 30496). In 1968, he released his first album "The Progressive Blues Experiement" on Austin's "Sonobeat" Records. Winter caught his biggest break in December 1968, when Mike Bloomfield, whom he met and jammed with in Chicago, invited him to sing and play a song during a Bloomfield and Al Kooper concert at the Fillmore East in New York. As it happened, representatives of Columbia Records (which had released the Top Ten "Bloomfield/Kooper Super Session" album) were at the concert . Winter played and sang "B.B. King's 'It's My Own Fault" to loud applause and whithin a few days, was signed for what was reportedly, then the largest advance the the history of the recording industry - $600,000.

R.I.P. Don Cornelius
Favorited: 3 years ago
Comment: I was incredibly saddened to hear the news that the creator and host of Soul Train, Don Cornelius, had died. Upon hearing the news, I began to feel as though a relative had passed away. Every Saturday, Don Cornelius brought an hour's worth of great music and incredible dancing to my home. Growing up in Mississippi, a state that still wrestles with its unpleasant past, Soul Train opened this white kid's eyes and ears to a whole 'nother world of music and style. I owe Don a debt of gratitude for what he gave me and the rest of the world. So, this mix is for him. Because I wanted to get this one out as soon as possible, it may be a little rough around the edges, but I've focused on the heyday of Soul Train - the 1970s. All of these songs were played on Soul Train. I couldn't find good audio clips of live recordings from the show, so the studio versions will have to do. Fans of hip hop and '80s R&B will have to forgive me, but I think you'd agree with me that I'm focusing on the music that Don loved most. Thanks, Don. You left too soon, but you left us with peace, love and soul. The Three Degrees - Soul Train Fred Wesley & the JBs - Doing It To Death Gladys Knight & the Pips - Friendship Train War - Slipping Into Darkness Stevie Wonder - Soul Train Song Jackson 5 - Dancing Machine David Bowie - Fame Soul Train Gang - Soul Train '75 Barry White - You're My First, The Last, My Everything David Ruffin - Walk Away From Love Marvin Gaye - After the Dance

RIP Gil Scott-Heron Mix

Comment: (50 MINUTES) - Music lost a titan recently, as Gil Scott-Heron passed away at the age of 62. In the early 1970s, Gil, along with the Last Poets, laid down the foundation for hip-hop with his music and conscious words. His song "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" is a searing take on consumerism. Gil often sang about the grittier side of life, and unfortunately, as the years went along, he lived that grittier life. I had the fortune to see Gil twice in concert as he made his last comeback after a stay in the joint. The guy had IT - that energy that can grab a crowd and not let go until minutes after the last encore is over. -- Gil Scott-Heron - The Bottle,,, Esther Phillips - Home Is Where the Hatred Is,,, Curtis Mayfield - Freddie's Dead,,, Stevie Wonder - Living For the City,,, Marvin Gaye - Inner City Blues,,, Donny Hathaway - The Ghetto,,, Ray Barretto - Tin Tin Deo,,, The Fugees - Killing Me Softly,,, Roberta Flack - Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye,,,Keywords: Gil Scott-Heron; mix; soul; funk; consciousness; black power

IUMA: Shot To Hell
Favorited: 3 years ago
Comment: Shot To Hell is an independent, original rock band that hails from La Crosse, Wisconsin, just a stone's throw from Minneapolis, MN and Madison, WI. This midwestern trio dishes up a gritty and sincere sound that seems strangely familiar, yet completely fresh and original. The true power of the band lies in their compelling and catchy songwriting that slaps a biting postmodern / pre-apocalyptic edge onto the more solid musical foundations of traditional country-punk-rock.

Songs For Trash
Favorited: 3 years ago
Comment: Another beer soaked Garagey-Punk band from Cleveland, OH. Much of the music could be characterized as guitar-heavy, proto-punk without all the busy two-minute solos that seem to muddy the sound of their riffy-rock peers. Think Pagans meets Dead Boys cumming onto some Faces. Gunfireâs full-length debut, Songs For Trash, was engineered & produced by Ryan Foltz of Rancid/ Dropkick Murphyâs fame at Cleveland Audio Studios. The band is currently booking dates for venues large and small. SINGLE SONG DOWNLOADS__10 SONGS...Keywords: Garage-Punk; Rock & Roll; Trash; Gunfire

IUMA: DragStrip Riot
Favorited: 3 years ago
Comment: DragStrip Riot formed in April of 2001 following Viva Las Vegas, the annual rockabilly weekender in Sin City. Born as a reaction to a stale music scene, three members of a Seattle car club joined forces with a punk rock drummer, setting the wheels in motion for a musical coup de tat. Frontman and group founder, Steve Bostick introduced guitarist James Norvell and bassist Matt McClusky to drummer Jason Frost. Longtime friends and former bandmates, the chemistry between Frost and Bostick was undeniable. The music came quickly and easily to the newly formed quartet.

Comment: Brought together by the forces of evil in 1997, this 4 piece gang of hoodlums have been squeezing the balls of Denver with their unique blend of punk rock, hardcore, metal, thrash, and satire... also aptly referred to as "Berzerk-Core". With their amazing high energy, FYF have played hundreds upon hundreds of shows in and around the Denver area, including shows with such bands as Bad Luck 13, The Forgotten, Toxic Narcotic, The Casualites, Hudson Falcons, and D.I. to name a solemn few. They have also been on several independently financed tours of this great country of ours (the U.S. ya moron), spreading their plague to millions of unsuspecting citizens. The band's second full length "Psychobabble" is being released this summer on Agitate The System Records (featuring cover art by Dave "Oderus Urungus" Brockie of GWAR). Comes with a free kleenex for bleeding ears and ruptured anuses. ROCK ON..... OR BE DESTROYED!!!

This time there will be no strong genre dispersion as in previous and its concept is under construction round modern groups playing garage rock and garage punk. Wild About You! Tales from the Australian Rock Undergound 1963-68 [leda030]
Favorited: 4 years ago
Comment: Bloodied noses! Car crashes! Police harassment! Jealous boyfriends! These were just a few of the hazards that faced the beat groups who roamed Australia during the mid-sixties. Despite these obstacles (perhaps because of them) a number of homegrown acts came to epitomise the down and dirty sound of the Antipodean underground. Released in 2004 by Melbourne Community Radio Station 3CR, the book (by Iain McIntyre and Ian D Marks) and accompanying tribute CD (featuring 19 of Melbourne's toppest contemporary groups doing covers of the most classic retro-stompwise slopp) quickly sold out. The Ledatape Organisation is overstoked beyond all comprehension to re-present the tunes from the disc. Freeeeeeee!

The Fire Dept. - Elpee for Another Time [leda015]
Favorited: 4 years ago
Comment: Without question, the greatest English psyche masterpiece ever! Well, since the advent of recorded music, anyway. Originally from Yep! of Hove in 1996 (surely you mean 1969? - ed.) - now available on LedaTape by arrangement with Cormorant Recordings.

The Fire Dept. - L'Oeuf D'Or [leda014]
Favorited: 4 years ago
Comment: Originally released in 1995 on Billy Childish's Hangman's Daughter label, this is the universally acclaimed debut LP of the legendary (in as much as they didn't actually exist) Hove (ex-Cambridge) group. Some call it garage, some call it punk, some call it garage-punk, and others leave out the hyphen. Who cares?! This is uh da bomb

Topical and Traditional Folk Music: “Bringing It All Back Home” by Bob Dylan
Favorited: 4 years ago
Comment: After a fairly brief and appropriately poetically abstract introduction, Roy Trumbull plays Bob Dylan’s fifth studio album “Bringing It All Back Home,” in its entirety. This program was recorded on April 17, 1965, just a month after the LP had been released on Columbia Records. Long recognized as the album in which Dylan embraced rock and roll and turned from writing political protest songs to those more personal or allegorical in nature, “Bringing It All Back Home” featured one side of acoustic songs and another where Dylan is backed by an electric band. After playing the entire album, Trumbull concludes the program with a little more of his storytelling and an earlier Dylan masterpiece “One Too Many Mornings” before finishing it all off with a song by Tom Paxton. - Keywords: KPFA-FM; Folk Music; Music

Folk Music with Rolf Cahn: Mance Lipscomb
Favorited: 4 years ago
Comment: In a program originally recorded in May of 1963, Rolf Cahn and Phil Huffman talk to Texas bluesman Mance Lipscomb, about his life and music. He describes growing up as a Baptist in the South, the balance between singing and playing music, as well as the origins of many of his best known songs. Throughout the discussion, Lipscomb performs a number of both, famous and obscure, acoustic blues songs, often responding to requests by Huffman and Cahn, who sound as pleased as two cats in a fish pond to be there for their own private concert by this extraordinary talent. - Keywords: KPFA-FM; Interview and Music; Popular Music; Folk Music
